The Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra is one of the world's leading orchestras and was last voted third in a ranking of the ten best orchestras in the world compiled by renowned music journalists in 2023.

Founded in 1949, the BRSO developed its unique profile under its chief conductors Eugen Jochum, Rafael Kubelík, Sir Colin Davis, Lorin Maazel and Mariss Jansons. Sir Simon Rattle has been the orchestra's chief conductor since the 2023/24 season, continuing established traditions and breaking new ground.

In addition to the interpretation of the classical-romantic orchestral repertoire, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra's central concerns also include the cultivation of contemporary music as part ofmusica viva, founded by Karl Amadeus Hartmann in 1945. Inspired by Sir Simon Rattle, the orchestra is also increasingly devoting itself to baroque music and historically informed performance practice in its "hip" series. Numerous national and international awards that the BRSO has received for its CD recordings, including the Grammy and Diapason d'or awards on numerous occasions and, most recently, the German Record Critics' Award for Mahler's 6th Symphony under Sir Simon Rattle, testify to the orchestra's outstanding musical caliber.

Another focus of the BRSO is the promotion of young musicians. The "BRSO Academy", one of the most renowned training facilities of its kind, and the ARD International Music Competition, which was founded in 1952, are dedicated to this.

The music education program "BRSO und du" also plays an important role in the orchestra's program with various formats and offers for schools and families with children.

Since the beginning, many renowned guest conductors such as Erich and Carlos Kleiber, Otto Klemperer, Leonard Bernstein, Günter Wand, Georg Solti, Carlo Maria Giulini, Kurt Sanderling and Wolfgang Sawallisch have left their mark on the symphony orchestra. Today, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Riccardo Muti, Herbert Blomstedt, Franz Welser-Möst, Daniel Harding and Iván Fischer are important partners. The Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra tours Europe, Asia and North and South America time and again.

In the future, the BRSO would like to move into the Konzerthaus München in the Werksviertel-Mitte and contribute to further enriching the cultural landscape of Munich, Bavaria and the whole of Germany and create an internationally attractive venue. The orchestra is already present there: in its BRSO Container, with the chamber music series "Watch This Space" (TonHalle, Technikum) or through events such as the BRSO Family Day. In addition, the popular orchestra podcast "Schoenholtz" is recorded in the BRSO container with a wide variety of guests. A visit to the recordings is possible by arrangement.
