14. Afrikanisches Filmfestival Hamburg

The 14th African Film Festival Hamburg will take place from November 6 to 16, 2025 at Studio Kino. Almost 30 films from over 20 countries - from Algeria to Kenya, Nigeria, Zambia and Chad to the Central African Republic - provide insights into the realities of life that are rarely highlighted in media outside Africa. On November 4, before the official opening, a free special event will take place at Kühne Logistics University, which will focus on the challenges faced by African students abroad.

The program covers a wide range of topics: Films tell of social grievances, global power relations, political resistance and social upheaval, but also of resilience, self-assertion and everyday life. Another focus is on questions of identity and life between cultures. Young filmmakers dedicate themselves to their roots, confront family secrets or depict experiences between tradition and modernity. Three films from North, Central and South Africa shed light on queer realities of life. They show the situation of homosexual and intersex people in Islamic and Christian contexts. In addition, artistic forms of expression are not neglected: on the one hand, dance is used as a means of reflecting on politics and society, while a music film pays tribute to the legacy of one of the most important Senegalese percussionists.

On November 22nd , two audience awards for the best feature film and documentary will be presented at the Alabama Cinema, which will be shown again in an additional event. Tickets are available online and at the respective cinemas.
