Following the glittering start to the season, the 2nd Academy Concert will focus on two masterpieces that oscillate between passionate longing and brilliant virtuosity.

Rachmaninov's Second Symphony is regarded as a major work of Russian late Romanticism. With indulgent melancholy, grand climaxes and epic arches, it unfolds an overwhelming emotional power. Bartók's second violin concerto, which combines concertante brilliance with subtle sound poetry, provides a rich contrast. Concertmaster Olga Pogorelova takes on the demanding solo part and interprets Bartók's multi-layered mixture of folkloristic motifs, romantic tradition and modern elements.
