Relationships make up our lives, determine our happiness, but always remain a bit of a mystery. Perhaps these were Edward Elgar's thoughts when he improvised the theme of his later so-called Enigma Variations on the piano. His wife first had to convince him that this found piece was more than just a fleeting inspiration. In his most successful composition to date, he drew encrypted portraits of close friends and companions. Peter Grimes lacks such people in Benjamin Britten's successful opera of the same name. The Four Sea Interludes taken from it illuminate the developing tensions and conflicts with incredibly evocative, tone-painting and poignant music, as if under a burning glass. Between these two landmarks of British symphonic music, we have invited Christoph Sietzen to perform Detlev Glanert's new Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra with our orchestra, atmospherically dense music that does not shy away from a gripping jazzy groove.
