dérivedérive is a temporary intervention in public space by Abdoul Karim Martens and Dominik Sartor. Based on Guy Debord's concept of dérive - a purposeless wandering through the city, guided by its atmospheres - the work understands urban space as a structure of affects, encounters and latent tensions. It proposes to suspend expediency and understands the city as a collectively formed space. By resisting privatization and capitalist logic, the work claims urban space as a place of shared experiences, resources and participation.
Referring to the right to the city (Henri Lefebvre), the artists install a free-standing, mobile white wall for a few hours at selected locations in the urban space - in the port of Münster, a culturally characterized quarter with historic industrial buildings, as well as in the Hoppengarten, on a communally used field of the Erntezeit initiative, opposite the former Heerde-Kolleg. The wall does not block any paths or restrict any use; rather, it blends into the existing infrastructure as a subtle irritation and bears the artists' works on its surface. Temporally limited and completely reversible, dérivedérive leaves no physical traces after dismantling. Nevertheless, the intervention shifts perception and sharpens the eye for those subtle transitions, breaks and atmospheres that structure everyday life.
In Münster, the work appears for the first time in an institutional setting and reverses the principle of the white cube: While the exhibition space functions as a depot - the wrapped wall and the works rest on a trolley in the gallery - the outdoor space is activated for a temporary, mobile presentation. In the morning, the artists leave the Stadthausgalerie, roll the trolley through the city and erect the wall on site to show their works. In the evening, they dismantle the installation and bring it back to the Stadthausgalerie.
