The Folkwang University of the Arts as a guest in Duisburg: this means lively teaching and learning, extraordinary concert series, master classes and regular musical events throughout the year.
Apart from the fact that the Chamber Music, Piano and Early Music departments have been based at the Duisburg campus since the university reform in 2002, there has long been a close connection with the Duisburg Philharmonic Orchestra, from whose circle influential teaching personalities have repeatedly worked at the university. A comprehensive musical education qualifies the next generation for solo playing and chamber music as well as for orchestral work, which is still at the top of young graduates' career aspirations. The Duisburg Philharmonic's profile concerts regularly demonstrate how high-level orchestral playing and a passionate commitment to chamber music can inspire each other.
The pedagogical exchange with students is particularly intensive in the masterclasses that the Folkwang University of the Arts organizes in cooperation with the Duisburg Philharmonic at the end of each season. In 2025/2026, the string quartet and piano trio course is aimed at the two most classical of all chamber music ensembles. Once again, violinist Suyeon Kang will be teaching the course. As a member of the world-famous Belcea Quartet and the Trio Boccherini, concertmaster of the Kammerakademie Potsdam and a long-standing member of the Camerata Bern, she brings with her ideal practical knowledge - in addition to the teaching experience she has gained over the years as an assistant to Antje Weithaas at the Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin.
As always, the course in the small concert hall of the Duisburg Folkwang Campus is open to anyone interested in looking over the young musicians' shoulders as they rehearse chamber music masterpieces. The results will then be performed by the course participants on the last evening of the master class.
