Affinities

In the organizer's words:

The anniversary year will conclude with the exhibition Affinities, which combines works from the Kunsthalle's collection, the former Vestisches Museum and the Ikonenmuseum with nationally and internationally renowned artists as guests in the building. All works are related to exhibition projects and/or displays from the beginnings of the Kunsthalle to the present day. The curator is Dr. Nico Anklam.

In reference to Thomas Grochowiak's groundbreaking exhibitions at the Kunsthalle Recklinghausen in the 1950s, or the large monographic projects of the 1990s in Recklinghausen with solo exhibitions by Per Kirkeby or Jannis Kounellis, with an eye for curatorial concepts such as Harald Szeemann's When Attitudes Become Form (1969) in Bern or Danh Vo's Slip of the Tongue (2015) in Venice, this exhibition aims to offer a kaleidoscopic look back and a perspective for the Kunsthalle and the art shown in it.

Curatorial and artistic practices will reveal aesthetic affinities that go beyond classic questions of epoch and genre. And these relationships will be understood and presented as affinities: Affinities.
