To the world-famous sounds of Verdi's Triumphal March, Kassel's new opera ship sets sail on its journey through the ocean of the world market and the shoals of its global crises. What begins as a sensual cruise of our theatrical stage tanker in Kassel's new INTERIM will soon become the benchmark for a future music theater of experience. And as soon as we set sail, some are already saying that the boat is full, while others are calling for a new defense capability in order to maintain the current prosperity on deck.

Despite its more than 200-strong crew of chorus, extra chorus and extras, state orchestra, stage orchestra and the famous four distant trumpets as well as the international cast of outstanding soloists, this musical ship of dreams is already in serious trouble on its maiden voyage with Giuseppe Verdi's Aida. It soon becomes clear that Verdi's exuberant love story is first and foremost a parable of European imperialism - especially in the popular choral scenes with their biting musical sideswipes at the war-mongering Prussian military and its cadaverous obedience. This imperialistic striving for a place in the sun evokes memories of the German Empire, which was forcibly founded by Prussia in 1871, the year of the premiere, and which is contained within the walls of the Kassel Jägerkaserne, built in 1910. On its former parade ground, the new INTERIM of the former Prussian, now Hessian State Theater Kassel will open with Verdi's monumental work in autumn 2025.

This is where Kassel's new General Music Director Ainārs Rubiķis and Artistic Director Florian Lutz come on board together to work on their first joint production. Opera enjoyment and participatory surprises are of course all-inclusive. Here, in the spirit of Verdi, the love between the slave Aida and the military leader Radamès becomes a humanist plea against people and nation, religion and militarism, making it clear that there is no right life in the wrong one.
