Europe's borders in the Sahara - migration, deportations and solidarity
with Azizou Chéhou & Moctar Nalossou (Agadez, Niger)
European border policies do not end at the EU's external borders. Deals with states in North and West Africa are aimed at repressive control of migration and flight far south of the Mediterranean coast - with disastrous consequences for people on the run. Thousands die not only in the Mediterranean or the Atlantic, but also on the routes through the Sahara.
The Alarme Phone Sahara (APS) works in Agadez and northern Niger, with the support of medico International and other organizations, to support people in need on these routes.
The information tour provides insights into these developments and into the day-to-day work of Alarme Phone Sahara - from desert rescues and support for deportees to the political documentation of the consequences of European externalization policies. At the same time, it is about perspectives of transnational solidarity against a border regime that systematically violates human rights.
Topics of the events:
● Rescue work in the Sahara and support for people in need
● EU deals and border violence in the Sahel-Sahara region
● Deportations from Tunisia, Algeria and Libya and their consequences
● Situation of women and girls, including in the context of human trafficking
● Political work and migration under the conditions of climate change
Azizou Chéhou, coordinator of Alarme Phone Sahara in Agadez, and Moctar Nalossou, co-coordinator and accountant of the project, report on their daily work and discuss current developments in migration policy in Niger and the region.
