From August 28 to September 14, 2025, the BBK Kunstforum Düsseldorf is presenting "Alice in Wound Light: Me in the Now", an artistic exploration of the artistic self. The exhibition reflects on self-perception, personal and artistic identity as well as the visibility of inner and outer traces and fundamentally illuminates the self-portrait as a medium of artistic expression. The vernissage will take place on Thursday, August 28, 2025, at 7 pm at the BBK Kunstforum Düsseldorf.
The focus is on the self-portrait as a real or artistically interpreted representation of vulnerability, strength and inner transformation. The works on display make personal or fictitious experiences, emotions and physical and psychological scars seemingly visible, crossing the boundaries between intimacy, publicity, reflection and fiction. The self-portrait thus becomes a mirror of the individual and at the same time a medium for artistic exploration.
The project is inspired by the photographer Nan Goldin, whose documentary self-portraits are known for their radical openness. Goldin shows intimate moments of love, pain, trauma and everyday life and has thus redefined the self-portrait as a means of self-empowerment and social reflection. "Alice in Wounded Light" takes up this tradition: Vulnerability is made visible, pain and healing find expression in artistic strength. The exhibition thus creates a space for intense emotional encounters between artists and viewers.
