All We Imagine as Light

Prabha and Anu work in a hospital in Mumbai and share an apartment. Prabha has not heard from her husband for years and forbids herself any love life, while the younger Anu is newly in love and is secretly seeing a young man she is not allowed to love.

In "All We Imagine as Light", Payal Kapadia tells the story of Prabha and Anu, two nurses in a Mumbai hospital, in a poetically sensitive way. Prabha entered into an arranged marriage many years ago, but her husband emigrated to Germany shortly after the wedding and is hardly ever heard from again. So young Anu lives with her, who is still full of dreams for her future and has a secret relationship with a Muslim boy. When a rice stove suddenly arrives in the post - possibly from Germany - the world of the two women is thrown off kilter. A trip to the seaside with Prabha's friend Parvati gives them space for self-empowerment.
