Courtly life and the increasing presence of science, including in mathematics and geometry, characterize the Baroque effects in the arts. The sophisticated style of dress, inspired by the "Sun King" Louis XIV in Versailles, was also very elaborate.
The men's fashion with its long curly wigs ("allonge"), elaborately decorated justaucorps with vest and breeches and - for the first time - shoes with heels (!) as well as detailed accessories such as neckwear, gloves and handkerchiefs is almost more opulent in appearance than the Baroque lady's manteaux dresses. Both men and women loved a lot of make-up and perfume - also to distract from their lack of hygiene ...
Dorothea Nicolai talks about style and life at the time of Johann Sebastian Bach in her lecture "Allonge and Grand Parure". She will be accompanied by pianist Helena Lüft, a student at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich.

Dorothea Nicolai is a costume designer, set designer, author, lecturer and curator. She works internationally at theaters such as the Vienna State Opera, the Zurich Opera House, the Opera Bastille in Paris and the Salzburg Festival.
