Opulent musical theater spectacle
Paul Shaffer's play AMADEUS premiered more than 45 years ago and has since been adapted numerous times, not only for the stage. The film version was awarded eight Oscars. Opera Incognita is now bringing the play to our Silbersaal stage for the first time as an opulent musical theater spectacle with an acting ensemble, choir and music combo.
For his fictional story about Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Shaffer uses the trick of telling his final years in Vienna from the perspective of his adversary Antonio Salieri. Full of bitterness, the Italian composer with only mediocre talent is forced to acknowledge Mozart's unparalleled artistic superiority. At first, he tries to bring Mozart down through intrigue and even enlists Mozart's young wife Constanze. Obsessed by envy and resentment, Salieri finally sees only one way out: he must poison Mozart.
For Salieri, fighting Mozart is representative of his battle against a God he considers unjust, who has endowed a childish and boorish man with such great talent. He himself, on the other hand, was forced to be the only one to recognize Mozart's divine manifestation from his mediocrity.
