A woman faces one of the most difficult questions: the decision for or against having a child.
A young woman - an abortion, a child, no partner - is pregnant. This is a fact, it is tangible and seems very clear, although nothing else is clear. The woman, Laura, is at university, writing her dissertation, working in a gynecological practice. Day after day, she looks after pregnant women there, sees their shame, their patience, their joy, their fear. For some it is the greatest happiness, for others a catastrophe. For Laura, it is both. She loves her child, but panics at the thought of having another. And how could it be otherwise? Isn't every woman actually prepared to bring up her child alone?
Antonia Baum's new novel is told in a single mental movement, a long breath before anything begins or ends.
Antonia Baum is a writer and author for DIE ZEIT. Her books - the novels "Tony Soprano stirbt nicht", the memoir "Stillleben" and a personal inventory of the work of "Eminem" - have received a great deal of media attention.
