It was a political murder, an assassination that shook the whole of Greece in May 1963: the murder of Grigoris Lambrakis, the socialist MP and pacifist. A political affair in which the highest state authorities were involved: Security police, public prosecutors, generals, members of the government. The title of the film and the preceding novel "Z" (Vasilis Vasilikos) became a slogan after Lambrakis' murder. On streets, sidewalks and facades, "Z" stood for "He lives"; "z" is the initial letter for the Greek verb: "zei" = he lives.
The film adaptation of the novel by Costa Gavras achieved worldwide fame and is considered a genre-defining classic of politically committed cinema.
