Au Cinéma - Jazz Hoch Drei

In the organizer's words:

JAZZ HOCH DREI
From 2026, there will be fresh live jazz at the Hafenbahnhof every last Monday of the month

The new Jazz Hoch Drei concert series will revive the unique atmosphere offered by the little station house on the Elbe. Stage, audience, bar - there is no spatial separation at the Hafenbahnhof. The audience experiences the musicians and the musicians experience the audience more closely than at any other venue in the city. This is not a concert hall, but a living room. The ideal place for sonic experiments and new constellations from the Hamburg jazz scene.

In addition to the musical performances, there will be lectures, talks, visual arts and jam sessions. The concerts at Jazz Hoch Drei are a shared experience: after the sets, there will be time for reflection and exchange. Monday evenings on the Elbe end on a quiet and cozy note.

As the anticipation is almost unbearable, there will already be an opening concert by Au Cinéma this year, on December 15. Afterwards, we would like to toast with all music enthusiasts and invite you to an open evening.

Admission: 7 pm - Start: 8 pm - VVK: 13,60€ - B.O.: 15€

The jazz quartet "Au Cinéma" unites four international musicians, each with their own artistic signature: Clémence Manachère (flute/soprano saxophone) from France, Alex Petratos (drums) from Germany/Greece, Danica Hobden (guitar) from Australia, and Samantha Wright (clarinet) from England. Each is both bandleader and composer, active in their own projects with original music. This quartet represents a special collaboration in which four individual compositional voices meet on an equal footing.

A central feature of the ensemble is the unusual instrumentation - a quartet without bass. This decision not only opens up new sonic spaces, but also challenges the ensemble to innovatively shape the interplay within the ensemble and to redefine compositional and improvisational roles within the ensemble. The sound aesthetics move between chamber music jazz, modern improvisation and contemporary composition, in the field of tension between clear melodic structures and free improvisation.

The band is called "Au Cinéma" or "In the Cinema" because the very first gig took place in front of Jacob Bro's documentary film "Music for black pigeons" at the Zeise cinema in Hamburg. Some of the compositions are specifically based on passages from the film and transpose special atmospheres in the sound. Parts of the films are projected during the concert, so that visual aspects do not drown out the focus on the music, but instead form an abstract stimulus.
