Augsburger Geschmack

During the Baroque and Rococo periods, Augsburg was one of the leading art centers in Europe. In the late 18th century, the term "Augsburg taste" was coined to describe the Rococo style, which was particularly influenced by Augsburg artists - a synonym that was used pejoratively by supporters of the then emerging Neoclassical style.

However, this term has long since lost its negative connotation - and gives rise to the title of an exhibition that presents well over 100 treasures from the Graphic Collection from the 17th and 18th centuries. In addition to the artists of the Free Imperial City of Augsburg - including Johann Rottenhammer, Johann Ulrich Mayr and Johann Georg Bergmüller - it also takes a look at the wider German-speaking world and thus provides a comprehensive insight into the art of drawing of this period.

The exhibition is presented in two parts on the 2nd floor of the Schaezlerpalais and in the neighboring Grafisches Kabinett. It shows a selection of master drawings from the Graphic Collection's own holdings. These include sketches for ceiling frescoes and altarpieces, designs for copperplate engravings, sculptures and album pages as well as portraits and landscapes.
