Exhibition: Reality, the photo, the color and the image
The reality - the photo - the color
The artist Kerstin Henschel is showing special photo overpaintings in which the horizon determines the image. They show a landscape with dyke, houses, water, ships, lighthouses, reflections and clouds and sky in different light conditions.
The series is based on more than 2,000 photographs that Henschel took during her stay in the Wilke studio in Bremerhaven during the pandemic in July and August 2020.
The works show realistic photographs that are enriched in unexpected ways through the process and the examination of "color on photo and color from photo".
Through the building blocks of color, composition and formal language, fascinating pictorial spaces full of movement and of great suggestive power emerge from the realistic photographs. Their brightness and intensity lead to irritation. Horizons are shifted, topographies altered, appearing like luminous promises.
A procedure for obtaining unfamiliar images on the basis of familiar ones. The image is surreally alienated and surprises with its light and glow.
The exhibition is on view until February 20, 2026.
