The Weimar Republic - Germany's first democracy

An exhibition by Weimarer Republik e.V.

The Weimar Republic is an exciting chapter in German history that deserves more attention. As the first German democracy, it created many of the foundations on which our society is still based today. At the same time, it is a lesson that democracy cannot be taken for granted, but must be fought for and defended again and again. In order to convey these messages, an innovative exhibition concept was implemented that creates an experience space with multimedia elements.

Various film formats on the history of the Weimar Republic can be selected on the multimedia tool. Using a modern narrative style, the films offer an entertaining insight into the most important aspects of the Weimar years. In addition, references to the present are shown to illustrate to visitors the connections between historical and current events.

The content of the films can be explored in greater depth on the 16 exhibition panels on various aspects of the Weimar Republic. The exhibition not only addresses political topics, but also cultural, economic and social issues of the time, which still offer important insights 100 years later.

• What led to the collapse of the empire and the founding of the republic? And why was its constitution considered the most progressive in the world at the time?
• How did the hyperinflation of 1923 affect people's lives?
• What was the basis of the "Weimar myth" in the supposed "Golden Twenties"?
• Who was responsible for the destruction of the Republic?

These and many other central questions of that era are answered in the exhibition. The debates and problems are illustrated in an interesting way using contemporary photographs, posters and drawings.
