Cismar Monastery:1501, meanwhile we are living in modern times. Otherwise I would not dare to report on this monstrosity, which I uncovered 40 years ago and which still seems like a bad dream to me. My name is Martinus. I come from a well-off Holstein family and my uncle Albert in Lübeck, my dearest uncle of all, had sent for me because he had a job for me. Perhaps it should also be noted that my uncle was Albert von Krummediek, the Bishop of Lübeck.

But enough for this brief introduction, because the memory of these past events always leaves me where I always find myself, even in my worst nightmares: huddled on the beach of that little warder in the monastery bay, my face turned to the sky and hoping for a sign. But only the rain falls - steady, indifferent and hopeless.
