Conductor: Kay Philipp Fuhrmann
In this program, we look beyond mainland Europe and head to the island. We will immerse ourselves in the choral culture that has evolved over the centuries; the program will be dedicated entirely to the musical tradition of Romanticism and will explore various themes: A thoroughly critical and ironic look at the British Empire and the monarchy, great Anglican anthems for choir and organ, subtle choral songs and settings of poems on the themes of loss, farewell and death.
A core idea of the program is formulated in a piece by Edward Elgar: Blessed is he who is still able to dream. The criticism of industrialization, the increasing changes in living conditions and the desire for a decelerated existence were the motivation behind the composition of many of the pieces in our programme. Particularly in view of the current challenges on both a small and large scale, an examination of a section of British music history in this selection can do us good without having to raise a warning finger!
