The Bremer RathsChor has chosen this challenge from the recently deceased Margot Friedländer as the leitmotif for its concert on November 9, 2025.
The day is fateful for more than one event in German history, for example the proclamation of the Weimar Republic in 1918, the Hitler coup in 1923, the Reich Pogrom Night in 1938 and the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.
The choral works "Musikalische Exequien", three motets from Heinrich Schütz's sacred choral music ("Verleih uns Frieden genädiglich" SWV 372, "Gib unsern Fürsten" SWV 373, "Selig sind die Toten" SWV 391) and the composition "Wie liegt die Stadt so wüst" by Rudolf Mauersberger impressively express in the musical language of their time both the suffering that war and destruction bring upon people and the hope for a life in peace, freedom and justice.
This was also the concern of Margot Friedländer, whose tireless dialog helped to give living expression to this wish. It is in this spirit that the Bremer RathsChor hopes its concert will be heard and understood.
The soloist ensemble, consisting of Malwine Nicolaus, Franziska Poensgen (soprano), Aaron Schmitt (alto), Florian Stölzel (tenor) as well as Francisco Henriques and Lukas Gerber (bass 1 and 2) will perform the works "Un soir de neige" by Francis Poulenc and "Advance Democracy" by Benjamin Britten.
Beate Röllecke on the organ, Dávid Budai (violone) and Nik Divall (lute) will support the choir.
To honor the multiple historical significance of this date, the concert will be supplemented by texts from daily newspapers on individual events on November 9.
The conductor is Kay Philipp Fuhrmann, who also conducts the renowned Hamburg Kodály Choir.
