"Love knows no law," proclaims Carmen and lives accordingly. But how free is she really? The encounter with Don José ultimately spells doom for both of them. Georges Bizet's revolutionary opera came out in Paris in 1875 - and was a flop. The composer did not live to see it become his greatest success and even one of the most frequently performed works of opera literature: he died shortly after the premiere, leaving behind a classic that has lost none of its fascination to this day with melodies such as the famous Habanera or the passionate "Flower Aria".
Director Herbert Föttinger places the deep psychological relationships between the legendary characters at the center of his production and uncovers the invisible threads that unconsciously connect Carmen, Don José, Escamillo - but also Don José and Micaëla - and chain them together in a game of obsessions. Intense emotional entanglements, viewed through a theatrical burning glass and heightened by Bizet's highly dramatic music.
