Chanoyu – Japanische Teezusammenkunft mit Nobuko Sõchõ Sugai

On Sunday, December 7, 2025, at 3 pm, Chanoyu, a Japanese tea meeting with Nobuko Sõchõ Sugai will take place as part of the exhibition "HER. un/seen. Women artists in the Malkasten 1977-1997".

Nobuko Sōchō Sugai studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. She was an active member of the Künstlerverein Malkasten from 1991 to 1998 and was a member of its board from 1994 to 1998 before moving to New York. After a six-year stay there, she has lived in Berlin since 2004. In Berlin, she is once again devoting herself to the Urasenke tea path and the diverse artistic aspects of the Japanese tea tradition, which she already came into contact with during her studies. She received her tea name "Sōchō" in 2017 from the Urasenke Grand Master Zabōsai Sōshitsu XVI. In 2013, she was involved in the founding of the Chadō Urasenke Tea Path Association Berlin e.V., which she now chairs. She organizes and leads numerous events on the Japanese Way of Tea - including tea demonstrations, tea gatherings, workshops, lectures and classes in the tradition of the Urasenke Way of Tea - including in the "Bōkian" tea house in the Humboldt Forum, in Japanese missions abroad and in her own tea room "Genchōan" in Berlin.
