Cinéclub: 143 rue du Désert

In the organizer's words:

Our Cinéclub in April, which exceptionally takes place on a Wednesday, focuses on contemporary Algerian cinema with"143 rue du Désert". In it, documentary filmmaker Hassen Ferhani follows the everyday life of Malika, the owner of a café on National Road 1, which connects Algiers with Tamanrasset in the south of the Sahara. Hassen Ferhani transforms this café into a veritable theater, a meeting place for travelers around Malika's unique personality.

A woman welcomes long-distance travelers, wanderers and dreamers in the middle of the Algerian Sahara... Her name is Malika. Portrait of an old woman who only offers omelettes with or without tomatoes, but whose store is a place of passage and well-deserved rest for the few travelers of the desert.

143 rue du Désert was awarded the prize for best up-and-coming director in the Cineasti del presente category at the 2019 Locarno Film Festival.
