THE STORY OF FRANK AND NINA - LA STORIA DEL FRANK E DELLA NINA
ITA 2024. dir: Paola Randi. D: Gabriele Monti, Ludovica Nasti, Samuele Teneggi, Marco Bonadei, Bruno Bozzetto. 106 min. ItalOmdtU. FSK: n. A.
Three young people in a gray Milanese suburb: the mysterious Carlo alias "Gollum" is the narrator of this story, although he cannot speak and prefers to spray his thoughts on the walls as graffiti. The seemingly omniscient Frank, on the other hand, talks too much, doesn't believe he will exist before his 18th birthday and earns some money by doing other kids' homework for them. And then there's ambitious Nina from a Roma family, who wants to study to be free. At the same time, however, at 16 she is already a mother and in a relationship with a local gangster. This unlikely trio come together to form a surrogate family and experience bizarre adventures until reality catches up with them again. But as Frank says so beautifully: "Reality is just a question of point of view" - so the three of them can actually write their own story...
Paola Randi, successful at Cinema Italia two years ago with BEATA TE / DER ERZENGEL UND ICH, creates a stirring, stylistically unconventional portrait of three young outsiders who manage to break out of their bleak everyday lives with a lot of imagination and a dose of craziness in her latest film.
The director about her film:
This story was born out of a desire to portray my city: Milan. I experienced Milan as a teenager, then I left and now I wanted to tell a city through the energy and eyes of young people. The heroes of this story are three friends with their dreams, looking for their place in the world, for freedom, for confirmation of their uniqueness, for their way of experiencing the world and their relationships, in search of anarchic love, for liberation from the adult world with its rules, in which these three find no place. Because they are unique and unrepeatable (like you and me) and the social constraints of the city are too narrow for them. This is a story of three teenagers with a silent narrator, a revolutionary realist and an incorrigible dreamer and their adventures in search of their future, in a romantic and harsh but at the same time irresistible city.
