Makaya McCraven is a star of the new jazz scene. The Chicago-based drummer, composer and producer belongs to a generation of jazz musicians who grew up with hip-hop, drum'n'bass and beatmaking and incorporate these influences into their work as a matter of course. Since his debut album In the Moment, released in 2015 on the Chicago label International Anthem, the drummer and self-proclaimed beat scientist has repeatedly proven himself to be a pioneering force in young US jazz. In his stylistic border crossings, he repeatedly draws inspiration from gospel and spiritual jazz, West African percussion music and the folk songs of his mother, the Hungarian singer and flautist Ágnes Zsigmondi. Pulsating grooves, sometimes full of energy and rousing complexity, sometimes with restrained nonchalance, that send concert halls and clubs alike into ecstasy - welcome, Makaya McCraven!
