The film paints a sensitive and moving portrait of the fascinating star choreographer and artist John Cranko. He came to Stuttgart in the early 1960s and began to renew the ballet: he put together an extraordinary company whose dancers led the Stuttgart Ballet to the top of the world. The acclaim also went to ballerina Marcia Haydée, Cranko's muse. Like him, she became a world star.

The film shows the highs and lows in the life of a lonely, fragile soul in search of love and recognition and accompanies the uncomfortable spirit of an almost obsessive exceptional artist who uncompromisingly and self-destructively strives for artistic perfection for his visions. Cranko's choreographies, which are still groundbreaking today, come to life on the big screen in the graceful, melancholy and intoxicating dance scenes.
