Cumbia de los Muertos - A night full of rhythm, memories and conviviality

Get ready, Hamburg! For the very first time, the legendary Los Wembler's de Iquitos, pioneers of Amazonian cumbia, are coming to our city - for a premiere concert at our iconic festival: Cumbia de los Muertos!

Los Wembler's de Iquitos:

Founded in 1968 in the remote jungle town of Iquitos in the Peruvian Amazon, Los Wembler's de Iquitos are considered pioneering architects of Cumbia Amazónica - a regional variant of cumbia that combines psychedelic electric guitars, analog synthesizer sounds and rhythmic patterns with roots in traditional Amazonian music.

With their early recordings in the 1970s - including classics such as "Sonido Amazónico" and "La Danza del Petrolero" - they combined Colombian cumbia with influences from surf rock, garage psychedelia and global pop music. In doing so, they significantly shaped the genre of chicha, Peruvian psychedelic cumbia. Their style is characterized by trance-like grooves, tropical surrealism and a sonic reinterpretation of life in the rainforest and rural Peru.

For decades, Los Wembler's have been a source of inspiration for numerous musicians, bands and producers. They are considered pioneers of modern hybrid genres such as digital cumbia, tropical bass and electro-folklore, with artists such as Dengue Dengue Dengue (Peru), Chancha Vía Circuito (Argentina) and El Búho (UK/Mexico) carrying on their influence.

Today Los Wembler's enjoy international recognition - they are a living archive of Amazonian music history: active, innovative and as electrifying on stage as ever.

This night will be unique: a coming together of Mexican and Amazonian traditions to honor our deceased together - with dance, music and light. Look forward to candle altars, colorful ofrendas, fluttering papel picado and the driving rhythms of the jungle.

From the cemeteries of Mexico to the heart of the Amazon - cumbia never dies.
