What is the world - and what does it consist of? Is there something that links everything together? The exhibition The Fifth Element. Works from the Kemp Collection is dedicated to the basic building blocks of nature and expands the classical theory of the four elements - earth, fire, water and air - by adding a superordinate dimension: the fifth element symbolizes the unifying and visionary in the confrontation with the secrets of the world.
Around 70 works by artists from the 20th and 21st centuries, including Hede Bühl, Heinz Mack, Otto Piene and David Rabinowitch, take up this timeless theme and develop it further. Unusual materials, physical processes and experimental techniques in paintings, sculptures, works on paper and expansive installations show how the elements have found their place in art. In addition, motivic references serve as a bridge between natural and man-made worlds. The focus of the show is on the interaction between nature, art and science.
With works from the Kemp Collection and complementary items from the Kunstpalast's holdings, The Fifth Element invites visitors to rediscover the connections on earth.
The Kemp Collection
The Kemp Collection is one of the outstanding German private collections of 20th and 21st century art. In addition to abstract painting, ZERO art, sculptures and works on paper, top-class works of art informel and color field painting form the core of the collection built up by Willi Kemp together with his wife Ingrid, who died young. In 2011, around 3,000 objects went to the Kunstpalast and Kemp established the Kemp Collection Foundation to research and communicate the holdings. His donation represents a significant enrichment and is presented in regular exhibitions.
