Stigmatization of refugees and its consequences - with a solidarity swap!

Since the attack in Hanau in 2020, we have commemorated those affected by racist violence every year in February. Stigmatization of racialized people begins long before overt violence - in language, authorities and everyday life. In this issue, we therefore focus on those who are particularly exposed to this stigmatization and whose rights are particularly often restricted: Refugees. The everyday lives of refugees are made more difficult by regulations such as the payment card, which limits cash possession for refugees and can hardly be used outside of supermarkets, making their everyday lives extremely difficult. However, other regulations such as the Residenzpflicht also focus primarily on control and deterrence in the area of asylum. With contributions from those affected and initiatives from Mannheim, we take a look at the situation on the ground and ask in discussion: What does this mean in concrete terms for the people affected by these regulations? How are refugees faring in Germany and Mannheim? What are they and their supporters facing? How can we show solidarity? The evening will be introduced by Dr. Onur Suzan Nobrega with a commemoration of those affected by the racist and antiziganist attack in Hanau and an impulse that draws continuities from Hanau to the present day and also addresses the potential for violence to which refugees in Germany are exposed today. With: Dr. Onur Suzan Nobrega Jochen Winter Louisa Schlesinger Moderation: Dr. Sevda Can Arslan is a media and communication scientist and moderator. She teaches and researches from a power-critical perspective on topics such as police violence and the media at the University of Paderborn and is active in the May 2nd Initiative. Since the 2025.26 season, she has been a permanent moderator of the discussion and reading series "Das Haymatministerium" at the Nationaltheater Mannheim. This content has been machine translated.
