Hannah Arendt is one of the most important thinkers of the 20th century. Shortly before the 50th anniversary of her death on December 4, 2025, a documentary about this fascinating personality is now being released in cinemas; Nina Hoss lends her voice. When the young Hannah Arendt begins her philosophy studies in Marburg in the 1920s, Adolf Hitler enters the political stage. After the Reichstag fire on February 27, 1933, she hosted persecuted communists in her Berlin apartment; she was denounced and arrested. After her release, she fled to Paris, and after the German Wehrmacht invaded France in 1940, she managed to escape to the USA. Arendt became involved in political debates there. The McCarthy era, the Vietnam War and the Watergate affair preoccupy her and she warns of the crisis of American democracy. The film by directors Jeff Bieber and Chana Gazit is based on recorded quotes from Arendt's writings, letters and poems as well as photos of her and people who were close to her. Excerpts from television interviews, assessments by companions and classifications by today's scientists supplement this personal material. A film worth seeing about a philosopher and publicist who was full of courage and whose thoughts are still relevant today.
