The surrealist painter Leonora Carrington (1917-2011) only became known in Europe in recent years; today she is one of the bestsellers on the international art market. The directing duo Thor Klein and Lena Vurma have now adapted the first half of her eventful life story for the big screen. Based on the novel by Mexican writer Elena Poniatowska, the film tells the story of the painter's (played by Olivia Vinall) life in episodes and non-chronological flashbacks. In the 1930s, she lives in Paris as the lover of the much older Max Ernst (Alexander Scheer), then in the south of France. After the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939, Ernst is interned as an enemy alien; Carrington suffers a breakdown and finds herself in a mental hospital. She eventually made her way to Mexico via Lisbon, where she later started a family with the Hungarian photographer Emerico Weisz. However, she can never really escape her inner demons. Filmed at original locations in the south of France and Mexico, directors Klein and Vurma find atmospherically impressive images. The painter's artistic work is somewhat neglected. Whether this is a conscious decision by the directing duo or simply a question of the lack of image rights must remain open at this point.
