Director Mike Flanagan has already filmed several works by Stephen King; now he has taken on the book "The Life of Chuck". Chuck's life is unrolled from the end, which coincides with the end of the world. We see a classroom in a school in a small American provincial town. Suddenly, unrest spreads among the pupils and cell phone messages about a catastrophe make the rounds. Half of California has sunk into the water, simply broken off and washed away. More bad news quickly followed and then it wasn't long before screens went dark, TV news broke and cars stopped in the middle of the road. At some point, the lights go out too. Compared to classic apocalypse films, however, everything here is rather non-violent and bloodless. It's less about the thrill of the events and more about what this means for the people who wonder who they want to spend their last minutes with. They also wonder who Chuck is, whose messages are now suddenly popping up everywhere - printed on posters, broadcast on TV and projected onto windows after the blackout. "Thank you Chuck, for 39 Years" is written there. Before the mystery is solved, we follow Chuck (Tom Hiddleston) in three flashbacks to his past, a few months before his death, his youth and his childhood. Director Flanagan offers a colorful mixture of fictional biopic, relaxed disaster film and melancholy coming-of-age tale.
