Sandra (Valeria Bruni Tedeschi), who is in her mid-fifties, is an independent woman who has made a conscious decision to live without a husband and children. Her purpose in life is to run a feminist bookshop. Six-year-old Elliott (Cesar Botti) lives next door with his parents. Sandra and Elliott become friends and she quickly becomes an important caregiver for the whole family, but when Elliott's mother Cecile dies giving birth to her child and his father Alex (Pio Marmais) is left alone with Elliott and the baby, Sandra is even more challenged. Valeria Bruni Tedeschi shines in her role as the quiet and then again exuberant and imaginative Sandra, as do Pio Marmais as the overburdened father and Cesar Botti as the bright boy who is not looking for a mother substitute in Sandra, but finds an adult friend. Director Carine Tardieu has created an enchanting film, a sensitive drama about loss and grief, hope and freedom.
