Film, Musik & Vortrag: Das Lied der Haenyeo

Two evenings with the Haenyeo - the legendary female divers of Jeju

The Haenyeo are women who have been diving for seafood without breathing apparatus for centuries in order to make a living. Their unique culture stands for sustainability, community and a close connection between people and nature.

Day 1 - Lecture
Prof. Chul-In Yoo (Jeju National University, South Korea) will give insights into the Haenyeo culture, which was inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List in 2016. The lecture will be held in English.

Day 2 - Film & Music
The Song of Haenyeo (2023, director: Shang Mock Lee, music: Hyojin Moon) tells the story of female divers, their resistance to colonial exploitation and their songs. The "Haenyeo Resistance" is considered the first and largest social women's movement in Korean history.
This will be followed by a discussion with Korean guests. Particularly noteworthy: Hyojin Moon, the composer portrayed in the film, will be present in person and present live music from the film with her ensemble.
