The young FBI agent Clarice Starling is set on the imprisoned psychiatrist and killer Hannibal Lecter, who sometimes eats his victims. He is prepared to provide clues about the serial killer "Buffalo Bill" if Clarice confides in him the secrets of her childhood. The situation comes to a dramatic head when "Buffalo Bill", so called because he partially skins his victims, kidnaps the daughter of a senator. Lecter also manages a spectacular escape from prison. While the FBI follows Lecter's false trail, Clarice meets Buffalo Bill after a tip-off from Lecter. A decisive duel ensues in the dark rooms of his cellar. While investigating a murder case, FBI rookie Clarice Starling is drawn into a maelstrom of mass murder, cannibalism and incest. The enormously exciting film adaptation of Thomas Harris' novel is one of the outstanding film events of 1991.
