On Sunday, April 26, 2026 (7 pm), Klaus Brinkbäumer will read from his new book at the ATLANTIC Hotel Münster and talk to RUMS editorial director Ralf Heimann about the political situation in the USA, the restructuring of American democracy - and what this development also means for Europe.

Klaus Brinkbäumer traveled through the USA for his new book. He spoke to MAGA supporters, journalists and academics and paints a picture of a country in deep crisis. His diagnosis is bleak: the situation has not been this threatening for a long time.

The USA was long seen as a projection screen for freedom, advancement and democracy. But under Donald Trump, as Klaus Brinkbäumer describes in his book, the American dream has become a nightmare. Democratic rules and norms are being undermined, institutions attacked and political opponents declared enemies. In government are actors who work with victim myths and fantasies of superiority - and have abandoned the idea that changes of power are part and parcel of a democracy.
