Vienna in the post-war period: the four occupying powers have divided up the city and the black market is flourishing. One of the most mysterious racketeers is Harry Lime, who invites his childhood friend and writer Rollo Martins to Vienna. But when he arrives, he is just in time for Lime's funeral. Lime is said to have been the victim of a car accident, but his friend does not believe this version of Lime's death. Martins begins to investigate and discovers that Harry was not a small-time crook, but the head of a ruthless gang of smugglers. In his search for the truth, an ominous third man keeps crossing his path...

Graham Greene's fascinating thriller, congenially filmed in 1949 by Carol Reed with Orson Welles and Joseph Cotten in the leading roles, is resurrected in this truly exciting, lively new production. The protagonists slip into every conceivable role, almost creating a cinematic image of the film with cult status, to which the Harry Lime theme played by Anton Karas on the zither, the expressionist camera angles, Orson Welles' much-quoted "cuckoo clock speech" and the final chase through the Viennese sewers all contributed.
