Renata is persecuted. Since childhood she has been addicted to the vision of a fiery angel. Her fantasies expand and when she begins to desire the imagined angel physically, the illusion disappears. Now she tries to find this angelic figure in people and thus realize her fantasy. She loses herself in her visions and is increasingly ostracized by society due to her strange behaviour. Apparently possessed by the devil, Renata is even to be exorcized in the end. Ruprecht falls for this fascinating woman. His projections onto her sweep him away and lead to his personal descent. He sees her as a person who is driven and whom he must save, and so he too gradually loses his grip on reality. The two plunge into each other's depths, caught in a whirlpool of fantasies.
