or There and back again
Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit in his prime, is not at all a fan of excitement. So if he had known what the wizard Gandalf was up to during his surprise visit, who knows - perhaps he would have slammed the door of his tranquil cave in his face. Then he would not have been sent on a restless journey through danger and darkness as a master thief against his will, where giant trolls, orcs and spiders awaited him, and he would not have encountered the pale Gollum or the dragon Smaug. However, he would also not have found out how much daring there really was in him, what it was like to become someone else, highly esteemed by dwarves, elves and humans, a trusted friend of a wizard. Gandalf knew it right away: "There is more to you, Mr. Baggins, than you realize."
Where today's animated film revels in the new possibilities of being able to show everything, contemporary puppet theater gains its charm precisely through what is not shown, the gaps and empty spaces. The art here is not in completeness, but in the choice of the essential, the apt fragment that finds its continuation in the imagination of the audience: Thirteen dwarves gather in a cap, the valley of Rivendell emerges in a beam of light and a red eye foreshadows the terror of Smaug the Terrible.
