MONDAY SALON
Transformation only with participation - strategy development in structurally conservative organizations
If it is true that corporate culture eats strategy for breakfast (and transformation for lunch): How then can we wisely create strategy work in the organization? How do we make our teams, companies or divisions fit for adapting to changing framework or market conditions?
This can only be done "top-down", say some: only those who are responsible can turn organizations around and if the ponds are drained, the frogs should please stay outside. On the other hand, where do the clever ideas come from if not from the teams that are confronted with the changed environment on a daily basis and know exactly where there are problems with collaboration and which processes are outdated? So, say the others: Participation is crucial, strategy development needs broad participation.
Brigitta Nickelsen and Tilman Lücke have helped shape strategy development in their organizations. In organizations that, as public broadcasters, are considered by some to be conservative "institutions" and have to assert themselves in an industry that is affected by change more than almost any other economic sector.
The two report on how Radio Bremen designed and implemented its participative strategy approach and how Rundfunk Berlin Brandenburg tested the limits of participation in its strategy processes. And they bring questions with them to find answers together with the guests: What form of participation can be successful in strategic processes? What stumbling blocks prevent success? And: What do organizations risk in these times if they create a participatory strategy or not?
