In the organizer's words:

... a play with light and shadow, between illusion and reality ... an exploration of various facets of memory and perception: How do we experience the world? How can moments be captured so that they stand the test of time and remain tangible despite their fleeting nature? ... The arts as an archive of thoughts and sensations ... Music as a shadowy, fading memory ...

With "The Attempt to Record a Shadow" , the Rheinstimmen Ensemble transforms these themes into a multi-layered, performative concert.

The vocal ensemble, under the direction of Nicolas Kuhn, presents compositions by Kassia, Sciarrino, Ablinger, Tallis, Walter, Nono, Gesualdo, Czernowin and Bach throughout the space: voices wander, sounds intertwine, performative elements and musical improvisations combine to create an immersive overall experience.

At a documentation station on stage, video artist Linda Weidmann attempts to capture and archive the vocal ensemble's performance live: Film recordings, drawings, sketches and written transcriptions are created in real time and projected onto two opposing screens.

Over the course of the performance, individual fragments of this fleeting documentation are used to create a paper mobile in the center of the room. This object, designed by set designer Paulina Barreiro, casts shadows and conceals projections - making the visible invisible again.

Sound artist Maximilian Sauer expands the action with electronic echo effects and sound filters that change, distort and multiply the voices - and add new, shadowy dimensions to them.

A concert as an experimental set-up: fleetingness becomes a trace, the shadow becomes an image, sound becomes an echo of memory.
