by Heinrich von Kleist
Director: Michael Thalheimer
Judge Adam represents state power and justice in the small village of Huisum - Kleist's fictional 'world village', in which the conflict between the modern system of order and the reality of real life is reflected in a grotesque miniature. It is not only the pleasure-seeking and blackmailing village magistrate who lies and deceives to his own advantage; Marthe Rull and her daughter Eve, her bridegroom Ruprecht and the clerk Licht also become entangled in a web of deceit. The court case surrounding the broken jug becomes a farce, as the investigator is also the culprit - a motif that runs through literary and media history from Sophocles' "Oedipus the King" to contemporary crime thrillers. Kleist sets his play about the fall of the 'new Adam' in the bourgeois circumstances of his time - as a ludicrous comedy.
"Der zerbrochne Krug" is Michael Thalheimer's first production at the Deutsches SchauSpielHaus Hamburg.
Carlo Ljubek was awarded the Theaterpreis Hamburg - Rolf Mares 2017 for his portrayal of the village judge Adam.
