In the organizer's words:

A jug shatters in young Eve's room. Village magistrate Adam's head and foot are battered, his official wig has been lost and, unannounced, Walter, the court clerk, is standing in the parlor, ready to examine the Utrecht judiciary. Eve's fiancé Ruprecht suspects that a lover has broken the jug, the neighbor claims to have seen the devil jumping out of the window, leaving a wig in the trellis. "So take your course, justice," proclaims Adam and "judges" himself "by the neck in the iron". Eve suffers lies, blackmail and a sexual assault before accusing her own judge. It is not only him who is to be put to flight here, but also - with Kleist's biting and humorous use of language - the patriarchal customary law.
