What is a "boogie"? In common parlance, it's a dance or an opportunity to dance, a song or a party, an invitation to move, and move fast - whether on the floor or off, whether you're laying down or taking cover. Because this is a DESTROYER album and not an ordinary one, the implications of a title like"Dan's Boogie" are simultaneously more seductive and more dangerous. "A boogie is a deception, a con that doesn't quite work, the moves we make when we don't make it," Dan Bejar explains. "I think of spies, double agents, sleeping with one eye open and keeping an eye on the exits. But I also think of small victories and defeats on the road and improvisation."

"Dan's Boogie" is a groundbreaking album for DESTROYER, both in the sense that it takes steps that no DESTROYER album has taken before, and in the sense that Bejar had to overcome a number of intentional and unintentional obstacles to write the songs. Initially, he challenged himself not to write songs so that the ideas would bubble up inside him until they broke through the barrier, and in the months following the completion of"LABYRINTHITIS" turned into a year, then two, in which Bejar gave himself a New Year's resolution to play the piano for an hour every day. That took about four days, but the songs Bejar says are the result of that resolution, including"Cataract Time","Hydroplaning Off the Edge of the World","Bologna" and"Dan's Boogie", are all DESTROYER songs from the broad spectrum Bejar and his cohorts have created for themselves: Spectacle-laden pop epics, personal piano ballads and smoldering mood pieces that blur the lines between song, novel and movie, each full of the urgency of a state secret in the mind of a tortured spy.
