2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. The Munich City Museum's photography collection is showing a selection of rubble photographs from the post-war period.

The focus is on a cycle of images of ruins by photographer Herbert List (1903-1975), who returned to Munich in 1945. The exhibition is complemented by photographs taken by amateurs as well as professional postcards and photo reports. Slides by tower observer Clemens Bergmann, who captured the hail of bombs on Munich from the towers of the Frauenkirche, are particularly impressive. In contrast, List's particular approach becomes clear: he was less interested in factual documentation than in timeless artistic compositions that refer to his earlier stagings of ancient Greek ruins.
