Director: Lotte Reiniger | Germany 1926 | 66 min | 16mm | German original version
As a gem of film history, we present Lotte Reiniger's "The Adventures of Prince Achmed" from our archive. Accompanied by live music, this 1926 silhouette film, one of the very first full-length animated films, is a real experience! In the distant Orient, an evil sorcerer impresses the caliph with his flying horse. The caliph is delighted and wants to buy the horse from him, but when the magician names his daughter Princess Dinarsade as the price, her brother Prince Achmed intervenes and is unceremoniously blown away by the wind on his flying horse thanks to a trick played by the magician. Between distant lands and spirit worlds, this is the beginning of an odyssey from which he only finds his way back to his family with the help of magic. The filigree silhouettes captivate the viewer with their magnificent colors. An absolute must for all fans of animated film and recommended to everyone in these turbulent times, as the escapism from the 1920s has not lost its impact.
We are delighted that the silent film will be scored by two recent Muho Karlsruhe graduates. Andres Kaufmes and Tim Offenhäußer take Reiniger's silhouette epic as a springboard, not as a model. Their live scoring is not a soundtrack in the classic sense, but a constantly reinventing soundscape of modular synthesizers and programmed chaos. Live coding meets improvised electronics, noise mixes with hypnotic rhythm. The delicate shadow worlds of the film are interwoven with raw, unpredictable sound structures that retell the fairy tale between magic and escape. So much for the plan...

Supporting film: Look at the little bird
Director: Anna Kalus | Germany 1998 | 2 min | SD Video | Without dialog
A desperate young woman in a photo booth messes up one picture after the other. Look at the little bird by Anna Kalus deals with its own production process in an absurdly comical way in ever new forms of play. The montage cancels itself out in the dismantling of her idea.
We are very pleased that Anna Kalus will be present in person on this evening. He will briefly introduce his film and say a few words about it.
