In his famous novel, Denis Diderot, perhaps the most cheerful of the French Enlightenment writers, sends the servant Jacques and his master on a nine-day journey across pre-revolutionary France. His protagonists, reminiscent of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, incessantly discuss philosophical questions in a witty and entertaining manner - while riding and resting, stopping at inns, talking to others, drinking wine until late at night and experiencing all kinds of stories
