Is knowledge more important than preserving the world? What about the preservation of knowledge from the grasp of power? In a sanatorium run by the eccentric Dr. Mathilde von Zahnd, two nurses are mysteriously murdered. The perpetrators are quickly found: The patients Herbert G. Beutler - known as Newton - and Ernst H. Ernesti - known as Einstein - both former physicists. Due to their mental state, they cannot be held accountable. But nothing is as it seems. The two inmates, just like their fellow patient Johann W. Möbius, also a physicist, are only pretending to be crazy. Möbius because he wants to protect his ground-breaking discoveries from abuse by the powerful at all costs. Newton and Einstein are secret agents who have been set on Möbius. The men are united in their attempt to control the destructive power of science. However, they have not reckoned with the unscrupulousness of the clinic director. She turns out to be the real mastermind, who will use any means necessary to realize her own power fantasies.
